Delivering Alcohol Brief Interventions In your Community
“GCA’s ABI team has been delivering Alcohol Brief Interventions in Glasgow for 9 years. They have delivered screenings and ABIs in various settings such as pharmacies, health centers, job centers, colleges, supermarkets, and community events. ABIs are evidence-based and proven to be effective in reducing alcohol consumption. For every eight people who receive an ABI, one reduces their alcohol consumption to safer levels. If you have an upcoming event where you think it would be appropriate for the ABI team to attend, contact them at 0141 353 1800 or email abi@glasgowcouncilonalcohol.org.”
A male client, aged 35-45 and living in temporary accommodation, reported drinking 8-10 pints of lager per day, constituting hazardous drinking. After receiving information about a counseling service, the client attended his first session the following month, where he revealed a history of alcohol misuse, criminality, and suicide attempts. The client also suffered from depression, memory loss, and poor physical and emotional health. The client wished to maintain abstinence and develop a routine and structure for his recovery. Referrals were made to the Community Addiction Team, Feel Good Friday Group, and support for housing issues. The case highlights the importance of ABI stalls in raising awareness of available services, potentially preventing alcohol-related harm. For more information, contact the ABI Team.
A male client in their 40s-50s, unemployed and a hazardous drinker consuming over 200 units of alcohol per week was referred for counseling by an ABI practitioner. In the initial assessment, the client was noted to be suffering from alcohol withdrawal and was referred to the Community Addiction Team for a home detox. After the detox, the client showed interest in counseling and was found to be receiving support from other services. The client may not have been aware of the support services available without the help of the ABI service.
